Future Heirlooms – The Pieces That Define Menswear in 2026

Few of the pieces that define menswear today are actually new. Wide trousers, Fair Isle knitwear, western shirts, and scarves all have histories stretching far beyond the 2020s. Even technical outerwear and retro sneakers have been around for decades.
What feels distinctly contemporary is the way we bring these references together. We borrow from our grandfathers’ wardrobes, the American West, traditional workwear and the great outdoors, mixing it all with tailoring and sportswear. Future vintage, after all, does not have to be timeless. Sometimes the most interesting pieces are those that reveal exactly when – and how – they were worn.
Here are some of the pieces and styling choices that might one day come to define menswear in 2026.
Wider Trousers
After years of the slim silhouettes that defined the 2000s, trousers have gained both width and volume. Jeans, chinos and tailored trousers come with higher waists, pleats and considerably more room through the leg. Perhaps more than any individual garment, the proportions reveal the decade.
The Western Revival
Western influences have once again moved into the everyday wardrobe. Denim shirts, suede, boots, western belts and neckerchiefs are mixed with contemporary pieces rather than worn as a complete look. The references are old, but the combinations feel distinctly 2026.
Workwear
Chore jackets, sturdy shirts, carpenter trousers, denim and canvas have travelled far from their original working environments. Today, workwear is just as likely to be combined with tailoring and loafers as with traditional utility clothing. Often associated with Japanese craftsmanship and American heritage, the contemporary workwear aesthetic also draws on selvedge denim, meticulous construction and robust materials designed to age beautifully over time.
Boxier Jackets
Wide trousers have changed what we wear above them. Jackets have become shorter and boxier, from work jackets and bombers to Harringtons and classic Barbour jackets. The garment itself may have decades of history; the proportions reveal the present.
The Scarf As an Accessorie
Sometimes it is the smallest details that date a look. Scarves and neckerchiefs have returned as deliberate styling elements, worn with everything from workwear and denim to knitwear and tailoring.
From the Trail to the Street
Technical sneakers have become part of the everyday wardrobe. The Salomon XT-6 is a clear example of how trail and performance design have entered fashion, often worn with denim or tailored trousers rather than actual running gear.
Retro Sneakers
At the same time, retro sneakers have appeard for quite a while. New Balance and archive-inspired models from adidas represent another side of 2020s footwear: familiar designs from previous decades rediscovered and styled for the present.
Grandpa Core
Dressier Watches
After years of oversized sports watches dominating the wrist, smaller and more refined watches are finding their way back. Slim cases, neat proportions and understated dials feel distinctly relevant to the way men dress in 2026.
The Outdoors Moves In (to the City)
Shell jackets, fleece and technical fabrics have followed sneakers from the outdoors into the city. Arc’teryx may be one of the clearest symbols of gorpcore, a movement that has made performance clothing part of the modern everyday wardrobe.
Tied Up
After years of casualisation, the tie is making its way back. But rather than signalling a return to the traditional business suit, it is worn with odd blazers, knitwear, denim and wider trousers. Formality is returning, only without many of its old rules.
The Vintage of Tomorrow
Future vintage does not necessarily have to be timeless. Perhaps the pieces we find most interesting in 2056 will be those that most clearly capture how men dressed thirty years earlier.
Wide trousers, boxy jackets, western references, technical sneakers and a tie thrown into the mix. Few are new in themselves. What feels distinctly 2026 is the way we wear them.
